Barraigh sits in Na h-Eileanan Siar, the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, and is best known for its low-lying machair, wide white sand beaches such as Traigh Mhor, and the extraordinary sight of scheduled flights touching down on the sand at Barra Airport according to the tides. The main village of Castlebay is dominated by the dramatic Kisimul Castle, a medieval stronghold on a tidal rock.
The island’s history is a mix of Norse and Gaelic influence and it is long-associated with Clan MacNeil; today the economy leans on crofting, fishing and tourism while Gaelic language and music remain strong in community life. A causeway links Barraigh to Vatersay, and the surrounding machair and shorelines support rich wildlife, including breeding waders and seals.
