Sgìr Ùige agus Càrlabhagh

Sgìr Ùige agus Càrlabhagh sits on the west side of the Isle of Lewis within Na h-Eileanan Siar, characterised by sweeping machair, rugged coastline and sandy bays around Ùig and the sheltered crofting glens inland. The landscape is scattered with archaeological reminders of past communities, most famously the well‑preserved broch at Càrlabhagh, and the place names and local traditions still show strong Norse and Gaelic layers.

Everyday life is rooted in crofting, small‑scale fishing and traditional crafts such as Harris Tweed weaving, with tourism for walking, wildlife and heritage contributing seasonally; the community remains largely Gaelic‑speaking and keeps its ceilidhs, churches and local schools at the heart of social life while working on local initiatives to sustain services in a remote island setting.
