Uibhist a Deas

Uibhist a Deas lies in the south of the Na h-Eileanan Siar, part of the Outer Hebrides, and is a landscape of wind‑swept machair, long sandy beaches, peat bogs and freshwater lochs. It is ecologically important for its rare machair flora and migratory birds - corncrakes, terns and waders are regular sights - while the coast supports seals and rich inshore fishing.

Locally the island remains a stronghold of Gaelic language and crofting culture, with peat cutting, small‑scale fishing and tourism underpinning the economy; a rich archaeological record of standing stones and ancient settlements sits alongside modern community land initiatives. The presence of a Ministry of Defence range in recent decades has added a contemporary layer to island life and debate, but traditional music, ceilidhs and a resilient local community still shape daily life.
