Uibhist a Deas, Èirisgeigh agus Beinn na Faoghla

The area covering Uibhist a Deas (South Uist), Èirisgeigh (Eriskay) and Beinn na Faoghla (Benbecula) in Na h-Eileanan Siar is a patchwork of machair, peatland and long white beaches, linked by causeways and modest air links. It is striking for its wildlife-rich machair and sandy shores, archaeological finds such as the Bronze Age remains at Cladh Hallan, and classic links golf at Askernish.

Locally the Gaelic language and Catholic tradition remain strong, with a crofting, fishing and small-scale tourism economy and a lively ceilidh culture; the wrecking of the SS Politician off Èirisgeigh inspired Whisky Galore folklore. Community land ownership and local projects have shaped development in recent decades, so life here combines a strong sense of island identity with efforts to sustain livelihoods and services.
