Auskerry is a small, low-lying island in the Orkney archipelago off the north‑east coast of Scotland, characterised by windswept moorland, rocky skerries and narrow sounds. It is one of the smallest permanently inhabited islands in the group, with a tiny year‑round community and a handful of seasonal visitors, reached mainly by private boat or occasional charters from neighbouring islands.
The island is particularly valued for its wildlife - rich seabird colonies, seals and coastal flowers - and for a quiet crofting heritage that reflects centuries of Norse and Scottish influence. Local life revolves around small‑scale fishing, crofting and a modest tourism trade for birdwatchers and walkers, and the island’s simple buildings and a prominent lighthouse lend a strong sense of history and solitude.
