Stronsay sits among the Orkney Islands off the north of Scotland, a low‑lying, gently rolling island of machair, sandy bays and dramatic coastal cliffs. It supports a small community - a few hundred residents - whose livelihoods traditionally centre on crofting, fishing and shellfish, with tourism now an important seasonal boost thanks to good wildlife, beaches and easy walking.
The island has a long human history with Norse and earlier connections visible in scattered archaeology, and it retains a strong community spirit with a village school and local events. Stronsay also has a quirky place in maritime lore thanks to the famous 19th‑century “Stronsay Beast” carcass that washed ashore, and visitors are often drawn by the mix of wildlife, coastal scenery and island culture.
