Hawick is a market town in the Scottish Borders, in the south of Scotland, set in Teviotdale on the banks of the River Teviot. It has a compact, cobbled high street and sits amid rolling Border hills, a landscape shaped by its history on the Anglo‑Scottish frontier and by former mill activity along the river.
Culturally and economically Hawick is best known for textiles and knitwear - cashmere, tweeds and hosiery were once the town’s industrial backbone and specialist makers still trade there - and for its robust traditions, notably the annual Common Riding and a proud rugby culture centred on the local club. The mix of industry, festival life and Border heritage gives the town a distinctive, community‑minded character.
