Selkirk is a historic market town in the heart of the Scottish Borders in Scotland, set on the banks of the Ettrick Water not far from the River Tweed. It grew as a royal burgh and was long tied to the Borders' wool and tweed trades, with the rolling, wooded countryside of the old Ettrick Forest still shaping the local landscape; the nearby battlefield at Philiphaugh recalls a dramatic episode of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in 1645.
Today Selkirk combines rural commerce and tourism with a strong community spirit: the annual Common Riding brings riders and visitors together to celebrate border traditions, while literary links to figures such as Sir Walter Scott and James Hogg add cultural interest. Small-scale manufacturing, farming and local services help sustain the economy, and the town is a handy base for walking, fishing and exploring the distinctive scenery of the Borders.
