Rhayader is a small market town and parish in Powys, Wales, sitting on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains where the River Wye tumbles through falls that gave the town its name. It lies close to the dramatic Elan Valley with its Victorian dams and reservoirs built to supply Birmingham, creating a striking mix of engineered infrastructure and upland scenery that attracts walkers and photographers.
Local life is shaped by tourism, outdoor recreation and hill farming: walking, cycling and birdwatching are big draws, and nearby Gigrin Farm is famous for red kite feeding. The Elan schemes brought employment and change in the late 19th century, but Rhayader retains a village-scale community feel with markets, annual events and the bilingual character typical of rural mid-Wales.
