Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn sit on the banks of the River Severn in central Powys, with the rolling hills of the Cambrian Mountains rising not far to the west. The area grew up as a market town and woollen-mill centre in the 18th and 19th centuries - its industrial heritage survives in converted mill buildings - while the nearby Montgomery Canal and riverside walks give a strong sense of place and access to mid-Wales countryside.
Today the community is a regional service hub with a mix of retail, light industry and public services, and a lively cultural scene centred on venues such as Oriel Davies Gallery; sport is represented by Newtown A.F.C. in the national leagues. Llanllwchaiarn retains a quieter, largely residential character with historic parish roots, so the parish balances active town life with a close connection to its rural and historic surroundings.
