Becontree is a ward in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, in east London, largely sitting on the historic Becontree Estate - one of the largest interwar council housing developments built in the 1920s–30s. The area is characterised by tree-lined streets, modest terraces and small green spaces, with District line stations at Becontree and Upney giving quick links into central London and easy access to nearby Barking and the River Thames.
Traditionally a working-class community with strong ties to local industry such as the Ford Dagenham plant, the ward is now ethnically diverse and seeing ongoing regeneration that mixes retained social housing with new developments, community centres and local shops. There’s a noticeable sense of local identity and active community groups, and priorities tend to centre on improving housing quality, jobs and public services while keeping green space and relative affordability.
