Dodworth is a large village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, lying to the south‑west of Barnsley town centre and close to the M1. It expanded rapidly in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a coal‑mining community - the imprint of former collieries and miners’ institutions can still be seen in the village layout and social life.
Today Dodworth is largely residential with local shops, small industrial estates and community sports clubs, while good road and rail links (including Dodworth railway station) make it a convenient base for commuters to Barnsley, Sheffield and Leeds. It also benefits from being close to the foothills of the Pennines, giving easy access to surrounding countryside alongside a continuing sense of mining heritage in local bands and community organisations.
