Halifax sits in the steep-sided Calder Valley at the heart of the borough of Calderdale in England, with the River Calder running through and the moorland of the Pennines rising around it. Its 18th- and 19th-century prosperity as a centre for wool and worsted manufacture is visible in the grand Georgian Piece Hall, the vast mill complex at Dean Clough, and historic sites such as Shibden Hall and Halifax Minster.
Today Halifax mixes civic services, light industry and an expanding creative and cultural scene: the Piece Hall now hosts markets, exhibitions and events, while museums and regenerated mill space support galleries, studios and small businesses. There remains a strong sense of industrial heritage alongside ongoing regeneration and a socially diverse local community that draws visitors exploring the Calder Valley and nearby countryside.
