Penistone is a market town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, perched on the western edge of the Pennines and within easy reach of the Peak District. The surrounding moorland and rolling farmland give it a distinctly rural feel, even with good road and rail links to larger centres.
Historically an agricultural market town, it still celebrates that heritage - its long‑running Penistone Show is a notable local event - while hosting small businesses, light industry and many commuters who travel to Sheffield and Huddersfield. Community life is lively, centred on local clubs, the grammar school and the accessible countryside that makes it popular with walkers and cyclists.
