Darwen is a former mill town in the unitary borough of Blackburn with Darwen, sitting on the edge of the West Pennine Moors where the River Darwen winds through steep valleys. Its most visible landmark is the hilltop Darwen Tower (often called Jubilee Tower), which crowns moorland popular with walkers, paragliders and mountain bikers and gives impressive views back towards the town and surrounding countryside.
Historically the town grew around cotton mills and the Victorian textile industry, and while many mills have gone the town has seen regeneration with a mix of light industry, local shops and community projects. There’s a strong local identity reflected in annual events, brass bands and sports clubs, and the combination of industrial heritage and accessible countryside makes Darwen an interesting blend of urban history and outdoor recreation.
