Chesham sits in the valley of the River Chess at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, in Buckinghamshire, England. It feels more like a large village than a town in places, with pockets of historic buildings in the Old Town, green corridors and footpaths linking to the surrounding countryside; the chalk-stream ecology of the River Chess is a notable local feature.
Historically a small market and manufacturing centre - once known for boots, brushes and other light industries - Chesham is now a mix of independent shops, commuter housing and small industrial estates, and is the terminus of the Metropolitan line. Community life is lively for a town its size, centred on places such as Lowndes Park and the Elgiva Theatre, with regular local events and a strong sense of local identity along the Chess Valley.
