Buckinghamshire is administered as a unitary authority by Buckinghamshire Council, created in 2020 to bring together county and district functions across most of the ceremonial county while Milton Keynes remains separate. The area contains a mix of market towns and larger centres such as Aylesbury and High Wycombe, together with smaller riverside and Chiltern communities.
Geographically the authority is notable for the chalk hills and beech woodlands of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the floodplain and meanders of the River Thames on its southern edge. Economically it blends agriculture and traditional industries with modern professional and tech firms, aided by strong rail and road links into London, while High Wycombe still carries a historic association with chair-making and furniture.
Culturally there are several well-known visitor sites and literary connections, from the formal gardens at Stowe and the country house at Waddesdon Manor to the Roald Dahl Museum at Great Missenden. Socially the area ranges from affluent commuter villages in the Chilterns to more mixed, working communities in the larger towns, producing a varied local scene of festivals, markets and heritage events.
