Besses is a mainly residential ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, within Greater Manchester, centred on the suburb known as Besses o' th' Barn. The area has a village-like high street of shops, pubs and churches, a lot of Victorian and Edwardian housing, and good transport links - the local Metrolink stop and the nearby A56 make commuting into Manchester and central Bury straightforward.
Locally the ward punches above its weight for culture and community: the long-established Besses o' th' Barn brass band is one of the area's notable historic institutions, and there are active community groups, parks and small businesses that give the place a strong local identity. Historically part of Lancashire, the ward combines suburban living with easy access to the broader economic and social amenities of the borough and the city region.
