Altarnun sits on the north‑eastern edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, a scattered rural parish of granite farms, lanes and hamlets that feels very much part of the moorland landscape. Its most striking building is the medieval St Nonna's Church, often admired for its tall tower, carved woodwork and local memorials - the church is sometimes nicknamed the "Cathedral of the Moor".
The local economy is traditionally agricultural but now leans on walking tourism and visitors drawn by moorland scenery and historic lore; the famous Jamaica Inn at Bolventor lies within the parish and brings stories of smuggling and Daphne du Maurier’s novel to life. Community life is small‑scale and village‑centred, with a strong sense of place and many houses and lanes reflecting the parish’s long rural and coaching‑road history near Launceston.
