The Dalston and Burgh ward sits in rural Cumberland, just to the west of Carlisle. It comprises rolling farmland, stone-built villages and the low-lying coastal plain with wide views over the Solway Firth towards southern Scotland and, on clear days, the fells of the Lake District. The area's position along the Roman frontier means fragments of Hadrian's Wall and other Roman archaeology are never far away.
Local life is shaped by agriculture, small businesses and a commuter relationship with Carlisle, while visitors are drawn by walking country and local history. Villages such as Dalston have historic houses and community facilities, and nearby Burgh is remembered in medieval history as the place where King Edward I died in 1307. Village halls, pubs and seasonal events keep a lively social scene in an otherwise agricultural landscape.
