Scaleby is a small, rural village and civil parish in the newly created unitary authority of Cumberland in north‑west England, sitting a few miles south of Carlisle. It occupies gently rolling farmland on the edge of the Solway plain, so while the community is predominantly agricultural it’s also popular for quiet country walks and access to the wider historic borderlands and the Hadrian’s Wall area.
The village is best known for Scaleby Castle, a medieval tower house with later alterations that gives a strong historic character to the place; its story reflects the turbulent Border history and subsequent rural estate life. Today Scaleby remains a small, close‑knit community with farms and country houses rather than heavy industry, and its appeal is largely scenic and historical rather than commercial.
