New Houghton is a small former colliery village in the district of Bolsover, in north‑east Derbyshire, England. It was largely built to house miners in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and sits on the edge of the old East Midlands coalfield, now surrounded by rolling countryside and easy walking routes; the area retains a distinct post‑industrial character while being within commuting distance of towns such as Mansfield and Chesterfield.
Today the village is mainly residential with a close‑knit community, local clubs and a village hall and sees the legacy of mining in its social history and street pattern. It’s also conveniently placed for visitors to attractions in the district, including Bolsover and its nearby Bolsover Castle, while reflecting wider economic shifts from coal towards services and commuting.
