Bere Alston is a compact village in West Devon, Devon, set in the wooded lower slopes of the Tamar and Tavy valleys between Tavistock and Plymouth. It sits on the edge of the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with easy access to riverside walks and country lanes, and is served by Bere Alston station on the Tamar Valley Line, which provides a handy rail link into Plymouth and up the valley to Gunnislake.
The village grew significantly in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway and local quarrying and mining activity, and traces of that industrial past are still visible in the stone buildings and railway architecture. Today Bere Alston has a strong local community with pubs, clubs and a school, and many residents commute to nearby towns while walkers, cyclists and kayakers enjoy the scenic Tamar–Tavy landscape and the neighbouring parish of Bere Ferrers.
