Tavistock is a market town and parish in West Devon, Devon, England, sitting on the banks of the River Tavy at the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park. It grew up around a medieval abbey and later became a stannary and mining centre, so you still see a mix of Georgian stone buildings, industrial heritage and a compact high street with independent shops and a busy pannier market.
The town is a popular base for walks on Dartmoor and draws tourists for its historic streets, museum and regular cultural events such as arts festivals and the traditional fair. The local economy blends tourism, agriculture and small enterprises, with many residents commuting to Plymouth, while a strong community feel is maintained by cafes, artists and conservation projects celebrating the surrounding moorland landscape.
