Newton Abbot is a historic market town in the district of Teignbridge, Devon, England, sitting on the lowlands below Dartmoor. The town grew up around its fairs and markets and the confluence of the River Lemon with the River Teign, and its position makes it a practical gateway for visitors heading onto the moor or down to the south Devon coast.
Much of the town’s character was shaped in the 19th century by the arrival of the railways and continued industry; Newton Abbot railway station remains an important regional junction and the town is known for the Newton Abbot Racecourse and lively market days. Today it functions as a retail and service centre for the surrounding rural area, with a mix of long‑established local businesses and commuters travelling to nearby centres such as Exeter and Torbay; nearby clay workings and light engineering have also influenced the local economy and culture.
