Stinsford is a small rural parish just to the east of Dorchester in Dorset, characterised by rolling chalk downland, hedgerow farmland and a scattering of hamlets such as Higher Bockhampton. It feels quietly agricultural but with easy links to the county town, so many residents combine farming or small local businesses with commuting into Dorchester.
The parish is best known for its literary connections: the ancient parish church of St Michael's is the burial place of Thomas Hardy's first wife Emma and the resting place of Hardy’s heart, while his ashes were interred in Westminster Abbey; he used the local landscape as the model for his fictional Mellstock. That heritage draws visitors and walkers, but day‑to‑day life remains the gentle rhythms of village events, farming and a close‑knit community.
