Ferndown sits on a ridge in eastern Dorset, roughly between Bournemouth and Poole in southern England. Once largely heathland and small hamlets, it grew rapidly in the early to mid‑20th century into a mainly residential town, keeping belts of pine woodland and green spaces that give it a semi‑rural feel and easy access to the chalk downs and nearby coast, including Poole Harbour.
The town combines a busy local centre with a sizeable industrial estate, so alongside commuter and retirement communities there is a steady base of local employment and services. Its character is shaped less by grand historic buildings than by interwar suburban development, community sports and leisure facilities, and active local groups that sustain a strong neighbourhood identity.
