Epping sits on the edge of Epping Forest in the west of Essex, England, within the London commuter belt. The town is framed by ancient woodland - oak pollards, glades and rides - protected in the late 19th century by the Epping Forest Act, which gives it a strong sense of outdoor space and makes it popular with walkers, riders and cyclists despite its proximity to London.
The centre retains a compact market-town character with independent shops, pubs and cafés along a characterful high street; historically it developed around coaching and market activity and today combines local services and tourism with a sizeable commuter population. The result is a pleasant mix of Victorian architecture, community events and ready access to both countryside and the capital.
