Situated in the district of Epping Forest in Essex, Ongar is centred on the historic market town of Chipping Ongar and nearby villages such as Greensted. The area has medieval roots - a Norman motte-and-bailey and narrow streets survive - and is notable for St Andrew’s at Greensted, often described as the oldest wooden church in the world, alongside a mix of timber-framed and Georgian buildings.
Today Ongar sits on the rural–urban fringe of London, blending agriculture and small local businesses with a significant commuter population; independent shops, pubs and community groups remain important to town life. The former suburban rail link is now the volunteer-run Epping Ongar Railway, a heritage line that celebrates the area’s transport past and draws visitors for steam days and countryside walks.
