Rayleigh is a historic market town and civil parish in the district of Rochford, Essex, England, set on a modest ridge a few miles inland from the Thames estuary and Southend-on-Sea. The prominent earthwork of Rayleigh Mount, the remains of a medieval motte and bailey, gives the town one of its most recognisable viewpoints and reflects origins going back to Saxon and Norman times; the settlement is also recorded in the Domesday Book.
Today Rayleigh combines a lively historic High Street of independent shops, cafés and pubs with green spaces, sports clubs and community societies. It serves both local businesses and a commuter population, benefitting from good road and rail links to London and Southend-on-Sea, and retains a mix of Georgian and Victorian architecture that contributes to its village‑town character.
