The Headland is the compact, historic seaward quarter of Hartlepool, sitting on a rocky promontory that juts into the North Sea. It grew up around the early medieval monastery associated with St Hilda and is still defined by narrow streets, Georgian and Victorian terraces and the landmark St Hilda's Church perched above the old harbour.
Maritime heritage is everywhere here - the Hartlepool Historic Quay with HMS Trincomalee and the Heugh Battery Museum recall shipbuilding, fishing and wartime defence - but today the area is largely residential with independent shops, pubs and a small tourism economy. Local traditions and stories, including the famous Hartlepool monkey legend, plus periodic festivals and conservation efforts, give the Headland a distinct community character within the wider town.
