Wallsend is a riverside town in North Tyneside on the north bank of the River Tyne, immediately east of Newcastle upon Tyne. Its most striking historic feature is the Segedunum Roman fort and museum, marking the eastern terminus of Hadrian's Wall, so the town has a genuine sense of living on a boundary between past and present.
Historically the town grew on shipbuilding, coal and heavy engineering as part of Tyneside's industrial heartland - the decline of those industries in the late 20th century forced economic change, but Wallsend retains a strong community identity and ongoing regeneration, with local retail, light industry and many residents commuting into Newcastle. Culturally it's notable for a strong grassroots sporting scene (the Wallsend Boys Club famously produced a number of professional footballers) and for its proud industrial heritage visible in museums and riverside sites.
