Hatfield sits in the borough of Welwyn Hatfield in Hertfordshire, England, about 20 miles north of London and close to the A1(M). The town blends a compact historic core around Old Hatfield with 20th‑century suburbs and the green sweep of Hatfield Park, dominated by the impressive Jacobean Hatfield House, built on the site of the Tudor Hatfield Palace where Elizabeth I spent part of her childhood. The area also has strong aviation heritage around the former Hatfield Aerodrome, home to the de Havilland factory and the birthplace of post‑war British aviation innovation.
Today Hatfield is a mixed commuter and university town, with a campus of the University of Hertfordshire, a sizeable student population, retail hubs such as the Galleria and light industrial and office employment on former aerodrome land. Good rail links into King's Cross make it popular with commuters, while community life still revolves around historic venues, village clubs and regular events held in the parkland and house grounds, giving the town a blend of rural charm and modern suburban energy.
