Accrington is a compact post‑industrial town in the borough of Hyndburn, in east Lancashire, England, sitting on the valley floor beside the River Hyndburn and under the rising moorland of the Pennines. Historically a cotton‑ and engineering‑town of the 19th century, its red Accrington bricks – famously the hard "NORI" variety – and cluster of former mill buildings still mark the townscape.
The town is probably best known culturally for its football side, Accrington Stanley, and for a strong local identity that has weathered the decline of heavy industry; today Accrington combines light manufacturing, retail and civic regeneration with commuter links to regional centres, while community projects and markets keep a lively local social scene.
