Hyndburn

Local authority district in Lancashire, England

Coordinates:53.76, -2.39
OS grid ref:SD 74 29

Hyndburn is a local government district in east Lancashire, centred on the town of Accrington. The borough combines a compact urban core with a string of smaller towns such as Great Harwood, Rishton and Clayton-le-Moors, with the Pennine foothills and open countryside edging towards the West Pennine Moors and the Forest of Bowland.

The area has a strong industrial past, expanding rapidly in the 19th century with cotton mills, brickworks and engineering – Accrington bricks are a well‑known local product. Many former mill buildings remain and several have been repurposed; the modern economy is a mix of light manufacturing, construction, retail and public services, with ongoing regeneration efforts in town centres and housing.

There’s a lively local culture and strong community identity: Accrington Stanley football club is a familiar name nationally, and the Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington holds an impressive Tiffany glass collection. The district also offers good countryside access for walking and cycling, alongside smaller-scale festivals and community activities that give the towns a close‑knit feel.
