West Ham is a ward in the London Borough of Newham in East London, situated close to the lower reaches of the River Lea and the regeneration around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Historically it was part of Essex before being absorbed into Greater London, and the built environment mixes Victorian terraces and former industrial sites with newer developments that followed the 2012 Games.
The ward has a strong working‑class and multicultural character, shaped by its docklands and manufacturing past and by waves of migration which give it a lively community life and varied local economy. It’s closely associated with the footballing identity of West Ham United, is well served by transport hubs such as West Ham station, and continues to experience the tensions of rapid regeneration - new investment and jobs alongside ongoing pressure on housing and public services.
