Newham

London borough in England

Coordinates:51.53, 0.03
OS grid ref:TQ 41 83

Newham is a borough in east London on the north bank of the River Thames, made up of districts such as Stratford, Canning Town, East Ham and Forest Gate. Historically part of Essex, its identity was forged by the docks and heavy industry; the area was radically reshaped by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with the creation of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the adjacent Westfield Stratford City complex, and ongoing regeneration around the Royal Docks and London City Airport.

Newham is one of the most ethnically diverse and youngest boroughs in the UK, with dozens of languages spoken, lively street markets and cultural venues such as the Theatre Royal Stratford East. It hosts the London Stadium and is a major transport hub centred on Stratford station, and while regeneration has brought jobs, retail and tech growth, the borough still faces notable social challenges including high population density, housing pressure and economic inequality.
