Great Yarmouth sits on the east coast of Norfolk at the mouth of the River Yare, where the town meets the North Sea and looks across to the wetlands of the Norfolk Broads. The long sandy beaches, a bustling seafront known as the "Golden Mile" and neighbouring Gorleston-on-Sea make it a classic seaside destination with piers, promenades and coastal nature reserves close by.
Once a prosperous medieval port and centre of the herring fishery, Great Yarmouth has an industrial and maritime heritage that continues in its harbour, shipbuilding and more recent offshore energy links, while tourism - from traditional amusements to cultural venues such as the Britannia Pier - remains a key part of the local economy amid ongoing regeneration and conservation efforts.
