Catfield is a small rural civil parish in the north of North Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk, England, sitting on the edge of The Broads beside the Halvergate Marshes. The terrain is characteristically low-lying fen and grazing marsh criss-crossed by dykes and drains; a feature of the parish is the shallow reed-fringed Catfield Broad, which, together with surrounding reedbeds, supports notable wetland birdlife and a very particular Broads landscape.
Historically the area grew out of medieval peat digging and marsh reclamation, and its economy has long been rooted in farming, reed-cutting and small craft linked to the waterways. Today agriculture, nature conservation and modest tourism for boating and birdwatching sustain local life, while a small, close-knit community, parish church and village amenities keep a strong sense of identity even as some residents commute to Norwich.
