Harworth and Bircotes are twin settlements in the district of Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire, sitting close to the South Yorkshire border. They grew up as coal‑mining communities around Harworth Colliery and that mining heritage still shapes the area’s identity, from miners’ welfare halls and memorials to active local sports and community groups.
Since the colliery closed in the early 21st century the landscape and economy have been changing, with land reclamation, new housing and business parks on former industrial sites and a focus on regeneration led locally and by the Harworth Group. The settlements now combine a strong local community feel with good commuter links to nearby towns such as Doncaster and Worksop, while retaining reminders of their industrial past.
