Bawtry is a small historic market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. Sitting on the banks of the River Idle and close to the A1, it prospered in medieval and early modern times as a trading quay and coaching stop on the Great North Road; the town centre still shows a tight network of Georgian and timber-framed buildings around a traditional market area.
Today Bawtry has a relaxed, slightly upmarket feel with independent shops, antique dealers, pubs and cafés, and several converted warehouses and offices; many residents commute to Doncaster or further afield, yet the town keeps a lively calendar of community events and a strong sense of local history. Pleasant surrounding countryside and good road links make it a handy base for exploring the southern edge of Yorkshire.
