Bilsthorpe is a former coal‑mining village and civil parish in the district of Newark and Sherwood, in north Nottinghamshire, England. It sits on the edge of the more wooded parts of the county, not far from the fringes of Sherwood Forest, and is surrounded by agricultural land and small pockets of woodland that give it a distinctly rural feel despite its industrial past.
The village grew around its 20th‑century colliery, and although the pits have closed and the local economy has diversified into light industry, services and commuting to nearby towns such as Mansfield and Nottingham, the mining heritage remains visible in local memory and community institutions. Amenities like the primary school, village hall and sports clubs help maintain a tight‑knit community, and the place name itself hints at Old Norse/Old English roots typical of settlements in the area.
