Abingdon-on-Thames is a historic market town in the Vale of White Horse district of Oxfordshire, England, sitting on the south bank of the River Thames where the little River Ock joins it. It lies a few miles south of Oxford and has a compact riverside centre with a mix of medieval streets, a long market tradition and easy riverside walks popular with rowers and walkers alike.
The town grew up around the Anglo‑Saxon Abingdon Abbey and retains a strong sense of history in its buildings and museums, while socially it combines a local shopping and cultural scene with a commuter population for nearby centres. Economically it has shifted from traditional industries - brewing, paper and car‑making at the former MG works - to a service and light‑industrial mix, and hosts a range of community festivals, schools and clubs that keep a lively civic life.
