Shippon is a small village on the southern edge of the Vale of White Horse in Oxfordshire, England, lying just north of Abingdon and within easy commuting distance of Oxford and Didcot. The surrounding landscape is typical vale country - gentle chalk downland opening onto riverside meadows near the River Thames - which gives the area a distinctly rural feel despite its proximity to larger towns.
Historically the name Shippon comes from an Old English word for a cattle-shed and the village grew out of agricultural roots, with historic ties to Abingdon Abbey and the manorial economy of the region; the whole district was transferred from Berkshire to Oxfordshire in the 1974 boundary changes. Today it retains a village character of older cottages and some modern housing, a quiet social life centred on local amenities and clubs, and an economy where many residents commute to nearby centres for work while others remain linked to agriculture and small local enterprises.
