Kew sits on the north bank of the River Thames in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, centred on Kew Green and dominated by the internationally known Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The area has a village-like high street of independent shops, cafés and pubs, and good rail links via Kew Gardens and Kew Bridge stations; tourism from the gardens and riverside walks is an important part of the local economy.
Historically the district includes Kew Palace and a number of listed Georgian and Victorian buildings, and several conservation areas help preserve its suburban character. The botanic gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a centre for plant science and education, which together with an affluent commuter population gives Kew a distinctive cultural and social mix.
