Orgreave is a small parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, sitting on the edge of the Yorkshire coalfield between Rotherham and Sheffield. The area developed around mining and coke production - notably Orgreave Colliery and the adjacent Orgreave Coke Works - and the local landscape is characterised by flat, formerly industrial land close to the River Rother.
The parish is best known for the 1984 confrontation during the miners’ strike, the so‑called "Battle of Orgreave", which remains significant in discussions of industrial relations and policing in Britain. Since the decline of heavy industry the area has seen regeneration with new housing, light industrial units and reclaimed green space, while a strong working‑class and mining heritage continues to shape the local community.
