Aintree Village lies in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, just north of Liverpool in Merseyside. The flat, once marshy landscape is crossed by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the River Alt, and the name hints at old English roots. Historically part of Lancashire, it developed from scattered farms into a suburban parish as transport links to Liverpool improved.
Culturally and economically the place is best known for Aintree Racecourse, home of the world-famous Grand National, which brings a huge annual influx of visitors and local jobs. Away from race week it is a largely residential community with commuter links at Old Roan, medical services such as Aintree University Hospital, and a mix of local shops and green spaces that give it a village feel despite its proximity to the city.
