The Meres is a largely rural ward in Shropshire centred on the shallow lakes around Ellesmere, with a landscape marked by the meres themselves and adjacent peatlands such as Whixall Moss. The nearby Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses national nature reserve, which straddles the border with Wales, gives the area notable wildlife interest and draws walkers and birdwatchers as well as anglers and small‑boat users on the historic meres.
Locally the economy is a mix of agriculture, small local businesses and tourism, with heritage touches from the old canal network (including stretches of the Llangollen Canal and the former Ellesmere Canal) and a network of villages and market‑town services. Community life tends to be close‑knit, with active conservation groups and village halls playing an important social role in preserving the landscape and local traditions.
