Southampton

Unitary authority in England

Coordinates:50.92, -1.4
OS grid ref:SU 42 13

Southampton is a unitary authority on the south coast of England, historically part of the ceremonial county of Hampshire. It sits at the confluence of the River Test and the River Itchen and functions as a major port - one of the UK’s busiest cruise terminals and an important container-handling hub - with ferry links to the Isle of Wight and quick access to the New Forest.

The city’s long maritime past, famously connected with the departure of the RMS Titanic, is visible in museums, medieval walls and preserved buildings, while a sizeable student population and research activity support a growing tech and engineering economy alongside logistics, ship-related industries and tourism. Socially it’s diverse, with an active arts and music scene, strong community football support for the local club and major retail and leisure at West Quay, all shaped by ongoing regeneration and its port heritage.
