Torbay

Unitary authority in England

Coordinates:50.45, -3.56
OS grid ref:SX 89 61

Torbay sits on the sheltered south Devon coast, a compact stretch of coastline made up mainly of the three towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Often called the English Riviera, it benefits from a relatively mild microclimate, palm trees and a string of sandy beaches and rugged cliffs that form part of the South West Coast Path.

Its character is a mix of Victorian seaside resort architecture, maritime heritage and ancient sites - Kents Cavern nearby has important prehistoric finds while Berry Head is both a nature reserve and a Napoleonic fort. Brixham still retains a working fishing port and a strong seafaring identity, whereas Torquay is famous for being the birthplace of Agatha Christie and for its resort culture.

Tourism drives much of the local economy, supported by fisheries, small businesses and visitor attractions such as Paignton Zoo, but the area also faces typical coastal issues: a large retired population, seasonal jobs, second‑home pressure and housing affordability. Good road and rail links to Exeter keep it connected, and a lively calendar of festivals and outdoor activities helps maintain a year‑round appeal for residents and visitors alike.
